Refugee Education and Support

Region: Eurasia
Competency: Educational Development

Promoting Human Flourishing among Refugees in the South Caucasus
Refugees come to the South Caucasus primarily from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Syria, Russia, and Ukraine. The host nation is a middle-tier country, meaning it is an easy exit from their home countries, but not a place for permanent settlement. However, it is common for refugees to remain for over a decade or never leave.
Project description
This project will establish a collaborative community for refugees of all ages to meet many of the needs not currently met by other refugee agencies:
  • First language literacy
  • English language instruction
  • Remedial education
  • Vocational training
One defining characteristic of the project is the culture of collaboration. Those who receive services are expected to participate in community life by contributing whatever they are able: time, money, or skills. The community is challenged to embrace the concept of agency even as they experience significant areas of life outside of their control.
The project will not duplicate efforts already underway or provide schooling when other options are available. However, there are currently gaps in the support network to refugees that prevent them from thriving in their location or from accessing these resources. Our project will come alongside refugees and their families in the areas of training and education, encouraging present and future flourishing.
